Breaking: LimeWire P2P network shut down by RIAA
The New York District Court, at the request of the RIAA, has forced LimeWire to shut down its network and cease distributing its software. TorrentFreak has the full story, and updates will surely follow as more data becomes available.That a U.S. federal judge would finally grant RIAA's request comes as a numbing shock to the system. Perhaps the RIAA simply drew the right judge -- this is the same Judge Kimba Wood that found LimeWire guilty of copyright infringement back in May -- or maybe the lawsuit just snowballed in gravitas until it became unignorable.
For those of you that use BitTorrent, you might be surprised to hear that LimeWire is still most-installed P2P application with a market share of 37% -- uTorrent, by far the largest BitTorrent client, only has a 14% market share. If LimeWire really has been shut down -- and stays down -- this could affect the entire makeup of the Internet.

Phrays is a great way to learn new words and use them in sentences

I love learning new words. However, when I just read what a word means, more often than not I soon forget the definition. If I use the word in a number of sentences, though, it's easier for me to retain it - especially if the sentences are meaningful.
Phrays is a nifty little Web application built on this exact principle. You're supposed to go there once a day and check out the word of the day. It's always a "special" word, but the definition appears right along with it. Then, you click in the text area right under the definition and make up a sentence with that word.
Don't just make up any sentence, though. People will later be able to vote for your sentence, and if it's good enough, it will then appear in the gallery of past winning sentences. Right now, the "winning sentences" are sentences that got just one or two votes, because the tool is in its infancy (and because voting requires an account - boo!). But as more people discover Phrays (and the requirement for an account is dropped, hint hint), I suspect that voting will become much more interesting. As it is, it's a fun way to learn a new word every day!

As promised, my guest on Ask a VC this week is James Chan of Neoteny Labs, an early stage investment firm with operations in Singapore. Chan isn't some banker-fied expat, he's a "son of Singapore's soil" as he phrases it. He was educated in the system, served his two years in the army and got a scholarship to study in the US, part at Carnegie Mellon University and part at Stanford. That scholarship came with a hefty price: He had to come back and work for the Singapore government for six years or pay hundreds of thousands of Singaporean dollars to get out of it.
